Mozart Tangos (Suite)
Maurice Béjart

By a sleight of hand, two choreographies are brought together: M for B and 7 Tangos (an excerpt from Notre Faust).

The first was created to mark the birthday of King Baudouin on 9 October 1990 in Brussels, set to instrumental and vocal works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The second is drawn from Notre Faust (1975, Brussels), performed to the rhythms of Argentine tangos.

M for B was an offering for King Baudouin’s birthday. He is a rare and remarkable man, with whom I discuss music and philosophy, a fascinating figure. I know that he is very fond of Mozart, and so I had the idea of creating a somewhat playful divertissement based on Mozart’s music. I also wished to revive the seven tangos from Notre Faust as an abstract choreographic suite. I therefore combined a curious work, quite different from Notre Faust, which I called Mozart Tangos.”

— Maurice Béjart

In this ballet, the choreographer brings into dialogue the refined elegance of Mozart and the purity of pointe work, alternating with the sensual intensity of Argentine tangos performed by male dancers.
