Serait-ce la mort ?, The Firebird and Béjart et nous by Maurice Béjart at the Verbier Festival

The Béjart Ballet Lausanne will make its grand return to the prestigious Verbier Festival in Switzerland on July 18, 2025. The program will feature two landmark works by Maurice Béjart, Serait-ce la mort ?, L’Oiseau de Feu, along with Béjart et nous, an artistic proposal sensitively crafted by Julien Favreau, composed of solos, pas de deux, and ensemble pieces from various ballets by the master.

The evening opens with Serait-ce la mort ?, in the words of Maurice Béjart: “These are the four last “Lieder” by Richard Strauss, composed in Switzerland, partly in Lausanne. The title of the ballet is taken from the last verse of the final Lieder: ‘Is dies etwa der Tod?’ A man on the verge of death recalls three women he loved during his life. But a fourth figure always comes between him and the loved ones. He never knew her—who is she? ‘Serait-ce la mort ?‘”

The second choreographic piece of the evening is The Firebird by Maurice Béjart, set to the music of Stravinsky, will be presented. In the choreographer’s own words: “The Firebird is the Phoenix that rises from its ashes. The Bird of life and joy, immortal, whose splendor and strength remain indestructible, unbreakable.”

To close the evening, the company invites you on a dazzling journey with Béjart et nous. A journey through the danced (and musical) repertoire of Maurice Béjart, blending pas de deux, solos, and reimagined ensembles. An artistic proposal by Julien Favreau, offering an immersive experience into the eclectic and abundant work of the Master, performed by the dancers of his company today.
