The evening opens with Serait-ce la mort ?, in the words of Maurice Béjart: “These are the four last “Lieder” by Richard Strauss, composed in Switzerland, partly in Lausanne. The title of the ballet is taken from the last verse of the final Lieder: ‘Is dies etwa der Tod?’ A man on the verge of death recalls three women he loved during his life. But a fourth figure always comes between him and the loved ones. He never knew her—who is she? ‘Serait-ce la mort ?‘”
The second choreographic piece of the evening is The Firebird by Maurice Béjart, set to the music of Stravinsky, will be presented. In the choreographer’s own words: “The Firebird is the Phoenix that rises from its ashes. The Bird of life and joy, immortal, whose splendor and strength remain indestructible, unbreakable.”
