More than 200 artists will come together with the Béjart Ballet Lausanne to present Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, choreographed by Maurice Béjart, at the Vaudoise Arena in Lausanne-Malley, from June 12 to 17, 2020.
“The Ninth Symphony is not only a ballet but a profound human involvement in a work that belongs to all humanity and that is not just performed and sung here, but danced.” – Maurice Béjart
Five years after the triumphant performances of The Ninth Symphony in Lausanne, Gil Roman, the Artistic Director of Béjart Ballet, revisits the choreographer’s manifesto composed on Beethoven’s masterpiece, whose 250th birth anniversary will be celebrated: from June 12 to 17, 2020, two hundred and fifty artists from all over the world will present The Ninth Symphony at the Vaudoise Arena (Lausanne-Malley).
Joining 40 dancers from the Béjart Ballet Lausanne, the Tokyo Ballet, the Lausanne Sinfonietta and the Pro Arte Choir of Lausanne, under the direction of David Reiland, will perform this artistic manifesto for a united humanity. Culminating with Schiller’s Ode to Joy, it strengthens the bond between peoples to defend them against the madness of the world.
Since its premiere at the Cirque Royal in Brussels in 1964, The Ninth Symphony has travelled the world, from the Olympic Games in Mexico City (1968) to the Verona Arena and Piazza San Marco in Venice in 1975, or from Tokyo’s NHK for the Tokyo Ballet’s 50th anniversary in 2014 to Lausanne the following year. In 2020, the Japanese capital will host the first shows from April 25 to 29 at the Bunka Kaikan.
The genesis of this exceptional show was the focus of a movie, dancing Beethoven (2016), by the Spanish director Arantxa Aguirre, which won the Silver Spike Award at the Valladolid International Film Festival and was nominated several times all over the world in the “Best Documentary” category (Goya Awards, Forqué Awards and Platino Awards for Latin American movies, etc.).
