From April 25 to 27, 2024, the Béjart Ballet Lausanne will make its inaugural appearance at the Jiangsu Centre for the Performing Arts in Nanjing, presenting a series of three shows. The company will showcase four major classics by Maurice Béjart7 danses grecques , Adage pour deux, The Firebird and Boléro.

The evening program opens with 7 danses grecques by Maurice Béjart, based on the music of Mikis Theodorakis. “This is a ballet in which Greece – according to the Greeks – is very much present despite borrowing little from its folklore,” explained the creator of the BBL.

Second choreographic piece on the evening’s program : Adage pour deux, a pas de deux borrowed from Malraux ou la Métamorphose des dieux, first performed in 1986 at the Cirque Royal in Brussels, to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven.

The show goes with The Firebird by Maurice Béjart, based on Igor Stravinsky’s music. “The Firebird is the Phoenix, which rises from its ashes. Bird of life and joy, whose splendor and strength remain indestructible and impossible to tarnish.“ – Maurice Béjart

It will end with Bolero choreographed by Maurice Béjart in 1961, to the music of Maurice Ravel. The central role (The Melody) is sometimes given to a female dancer and other times to a male dancer. The Rhythm is interpreted by a group of dancers.
